Goodbye to Desktop Quickbooks

QuickBooks Desktop is being phased out, with support ending for Desktop 2023 on May 31, 2026, and the final Desktop 2024 version supported through September 30, 2027.

Sunset Timeline and Key Dates:

• September 2024: Intuit stopped selling new subscriptions for QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, and Enhanced Payroll, though existing subscribers could continue renewing

• May 31, 2026: Support for QuickBooks Desktop 2023 ends. After this date, payroll tax tables freeze, bank feeds disconnect, and security updates stop

• September 30, 2027: Support for QuickBooks Desktop 2024, the final non-Enterprise version, ends. No new Desktop versions (2025, 2026, 2027) will be released

• Enterprise Edition: QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise continues to be sold and supported separately, with no announced end-of-life date

What Happens After Support Ends

Once a version reaches its sunset date:

• Payroll updates stop and tax tables are frozen, which may lead to inaccurate W-2s and 941 filings

• Bank feeds and online services disconnect, preventing automatic transaction imports

• Security patches cease, increasing vulnerability to cyber threats

• The software itself can still open, and manual data entry and reporting remain functional, but any feature requiring external connectivity will no longer work

Check your version:

Open QuickBooks Desktop, press F2 (or Ctrl+1), and verify the Product Information window. Also, check your payroll subscription renewal date to ensure that you transition away from Desktop prior to your subscription expiring:

1. Go to the Employees menu.

2. Choose My Payroll Service

3. Then click Account/Billing Information.

Timing Matters:

Plan migration early: Avoid last-minute transitions to prevent data loss or compliance issues. Also, if transitioning to QuickBooks Payroll online; it is easiest to do this at the end of a quarter allowing enough time to do the conversion before the next payroll date.
